Affluent retirees creating boom in Custer - Rapid City Journal
Brunner is nailing sheeting onto a wall going up on a new home in Boot Hill Ranch Estates on the east side of Custer.Nearby in Boot Hill, Claudia Van Zetten listens to the wind whispering in the pines as she stands on her deck and looks out at Calamity Peak to the east and the Needles to the northeast.Van Zetten and her husband, Larry, moved here in 2001 from Littleton, Colo.Like many of the other relative newcomers to the Custer area, the Van Zettens had come here on vacation and wanted to return to live in its mild climate, gorgeous scenery and access to outdoor recreation.“I call it our intangible riches,” Van Zetten said. “You can’t put a price on that.”She is semi-retired, working at a seasonal job.
