Lieff Cabraser Named on ``Hot List'' of National Plaintiffs Firms ... - Business Wire (press release)
Lieff Cabraser's Nashville office is headed by partner Kathryn Barnett, an experienced litigator who in March 2004, served as lead trial counsel in the Tri-State Crematory MDL class action trial. That case arose out of the failure of a Georgia crematory properly to handle and to cremate thousands of bodies. During the trial, settlements were reached with the funeral homes who sent the bodies to the crematory, resulting in total funeral home settlements of approximately $37 million. In August 2004, a second trial on the aggrieved families' claims against the crematory's owners and operators resulted in an $80 million court-approved settlement. Lieff Cabraser is currently pursuing collection of that settlement against an insurance company that provided coverage to the owners of the crematory. Also as part of the settlement, the buildings on the Tri-State property have been razed, and the property will remain in a trust so that it will be preserved in peace and dignity as a secluded memorial to those whose remains were mistreated.
