October 17 The Elmer Hinton Memorial Library invited the Portland community to a book discussion of this year’s City Book Read selection Rocket Boys/October Sky. The discussion will take place on Monday, Oct. 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Portland Middle School gym. Everyone is encouraged to attend, even if they haven’t finished the book. However, anyone who has completed the book is eligible for awards and prize give-a-way. After the discussion, those attending are encouraged to put on their saddle shoes and poodle skirts (That’s chucks and leather jackets for you guys) or just come in regular clothes and “rock around the clock” with live music until 9 p.m. at a sock hop! October 17-21 It’s Christmas time at Gallatin CARES. Applications will be taken Oct. 17-21 for Christmas assistance. Anyone interested in applying needs to come between 8 a.m. and noon on Monday through Friday at the Social Service entrance for Christmas assistance for children through the eighth grade.
