That kind of apprenticeship was regulated out of the barbering profession 20 years ago, when the state created the Board of Cosmetology and Hair Styling, which replaced the Board of Barber Examiners. Since then, barbers have been required to attend approved cosmetology schools and take 1,200 hours of instruction, which includes practical and classroom time on practices such as hair coloring, permanent waving and facials.
