Britain Calling February 2006 - e-Travel Blackboard (press release)
England’s gardens are always a feast for the senses, but this year they are blooming in more ways than ever, with a host of exhibitions, a new visitor centre and hi-tech glasshouse opening, among the events. The Royal Horticultural Society will hold some of Europe’s most popular flower shows, the biggest surrounding Hampton Court Palace (July 4-9). Here are some other 2006 highlights. • The Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in West London gets its first new glasshouse for 20 years, opening in March. The striking and technologically sophisticated Alpine House is the new home for Kew’s famous collection of alpine plants. A summer festival (May 27 – Sept. 24) is focused around the reopening of Kew Palace, the Pagoda and Queen Charlotte’s Cottage. • The Orangery at Hestercombe Gardens in Somerset, the finest garden building by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, marks its centenary this year. Lutyens’ partnership with plantswoman Gertrude Jekyll at this lovely property is marked with a seminar on March 18, and the opening of an exhibition of photographs depicting houses and gardens designed by the architect (until late September). The Orangery, built of golden Ham stone, is reminiscent of a 17th-century banqueting room. • Savill Garden, - more available
