SPLIT SUFFICES: No. 3 Ohio State and No. 6 Colorado College split a season-opening, non-league series. The Tigers' 1-0 victory in the finale of the two-game set was noteworthy because it enabled Colorado to avoid dropping a pair of games to a non-league opponent for the first time since the 1985-86 season. Tigers forward and defending Hobey Baker Award winner Marty Sertich (Roseville, Minn.) scored Saturday night's lone goal at 16:54 of the first period, knocking in the rebound of a shot from 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medalist Brett Sterling (Pasadena, Calif.). The Buckeyes eked out a 4-2 victory in the opener on Friday, with senior Rod Pelley scoring an unassisted goal in the third period to break a 2-2 tie. Sterling, on a power play, and freshman Derek Patrosso (Northville, Mich.) scored for Colorado College. Senior Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) stopped 23 shots in the OSU net. LADY TERRIERS DEBUT: Boston University made history over the weekend at Walter Brown Arena when the brand new women's team launched its maiden season by topping Union College, 4-1 and 6-2.
