• Jeffersontown and Eastern needed five overtimes to settle a boys' basketball game last Friday (Jeffersontown won). But that didn't come close to being the longest game in state history. Forty years ago last night -- Feb. 9, 1966 -- Millersburg Military Institute beat host St. Patrick 106-105 in nine OTs. Don Stahl, who did the radio broadcast of that marathon for WFTM in Maysville, remembers the game seemed to last forever. One reason was that the game clock was an old-fashioned sweep-hand timepiece that ticked off only an eight-minute quarter. So between each OT, the referees let five minutes run off the clock so that only the required three minutes were left for overtime. That added up to 45 minutes of just sitting or standing around. "It was kind of aggravating," Stahl said. The Lexington Herald reported that the game lasted three hours and 20 minutes. People listening to the game on the radio wound up coming to the gym to see it in person. "The gymnasium was half full when the game started but was packed when it ended," the newspaper said.
