His high school counselor introduced him to Clarke from the Walla Walla wine school, who told him about the two-year program at the institute, and helped with scholarships. In recent years, Walla Walla has attracted wine talent from France, Italy, Australia and the Napa and Sonoma valleys of California, people drawn to soils, climate and opportunity. But at graduation this year, Palencia stunned his classmates when he said he wanted to return home, to the lesser-known Yakima Valley about a hundred miles to the west, to be near his family and try to make a great wine.
