High school students win awards - Skagit Valley Herald
The sixth annual Champions of Diversity Awards Ceremony was held Nov. 17 at Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon. The following high school seniors, unless otherwise noted, were presented awards recognizing their contributions to diversity in their schools and communities.Anacortes High SchoolGregory Hsu maintains a 3.89 GPA and has taken advanced placement classes in calculus and science. He has assisted with highway cleanup, Relay for Life and worked with elementary students. He plans to study engineering.Brian Jo has been active in International Club and has taken advanced math and language classes. He won the Korean speech contest and plays tennis for the high school team. Jo plans to study communications or military science.Burlington-Edison High School Maria Elisa Chavez de Tinoco volunteers at Westview Elementary as a bilingual translator and works at an insurance office. She plans to study cosmetology.Daniel Lee is vice president of the medical club, a member of Natural Helpers and Peer Mentors, and the swimming, track and cross country teams. Lee volunteers at Skagit Valley Hospital and plans to study medicine.Concrete High School Brian Trinh, a junior, is a Running Start student and college math and chemistry tutor.
