Viterbo University’s production of “Proof” is proof enough that David Auburn’s play is heart-warming and heart-wrenching.There’s one certainty in this version of the Tony Award-winning play: You’ll see terrific acting in a beautifully written play that you can’t help but love. While the recent movie based loosely on the play received mixed reviews, this is no mixed review of Viterbo’s production — it’s wonderful.Yes, you’ll hear about mathematical proofs and abstract concepts, but the story is not about math. It’s an exploration of genius and insanity. And it’s a quest for truth and certainty.It is an audience-friendly play with natural dialogue and strong characters. The scenes move quickly, so the drama keeps you on the edge of your seat.The play is about a mathematical genius, Robert, played by David Gardiner, a Viterbo theater faculty member. Gardiner is perfect, professional and passionate in his role. Robert’s mind unravels in his later years, and a daughter, Catherine, takes care of him for five years.
