Dahrouge is heading uptown now, toward Asbury Park High School.Not long ago, Carl Williams, a former Asbury Park mayor whose Mr. Fashion men's shop has long been a fixture downtown, proposed that Lenny Welch be included among the first inductees to the school's fledgling Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.He seemed like an obvious choice — that is, until someone remembered that Welch hadn't actually graduated from the school.In the summer of 1957, prior to the start of what would have been his senior year at Asbury High, Welch decided to drop out to pursue a professional singing career in New York City."I was glad to leave school," he says after Dahrouge pulls up in front of the still stately high school on Sunset Avenue. "I knew what I wanted to do."It was in New York that a record executive suggested Welch change his first name to Lenny because the man thought it sounded better. Welch's singing, though, sounded just fine. He soon signed a contract with Decca Records, which had him record a gimmicky single, "Rocket to the Moon," inspired by the launch of Sputnik I, the world's first artificial satellite, in 1957.Welch released several singles while he was with - more available
