His early attempts to build animatronic creatures were not unqualified successes. In 1986, he was part of a team that was given 10 weeks to design and make a pack of Antipodean werewolves for the risible US horror film Howling III: The Marsupials. The tight schedule and budget forced them to cut corners and the results still make him cringe. "If you look closely at one of the creatures, you can see the foam hanging down inside its mouth," he says, looking genuinely mortified. "It's one of those films that make you want to stand up at the front of the cinema and say, 'OK, folks, this is what happened'."
