Repairing the breach - Charlotte Observer
Inspired by my own Christian faith and the teaching of the Hebrew Talmud -- learned in an ethics course I had taken at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America -- that everyone when asked for help should do something, I decided to become a volunteer with the joint Lutheran/ Episcopal Church Disaster Relief Site being set up in Long Beach, Miss. Directed by Mississippi's Episcopal diocese, the relief center is serving those families hardest hit by disaster in Pass Christian and Waveland.It took about 12 hours to drive from North Carolina to the Coast Episcopal School. Although damaged from the hurricane, the school served initially as the relief site until tents could be erected nearby. My car was packed with cases of bottled water and canned food, boxes of mountain-grown apples, a sleeping bag, hand-tools and cleaning supplies I might use in helping others clean up debris.
