WANTED: VOLUNTEERS - Contra Costa Times
• Contra Costa Health Services -- Accepting applications for Senior Peer Counseling Program. Training emphasizes effective listening and communication skills. Includes topics such as typical changes in the physical and mental health of older adults; challenges in social and family relationships; dealing with loss and change in their daily lives; and healthy aging. Volunteers who complete the 10-week training earn a certificate and serve as counselors working directly with older people under the supervision of mental health professionals. Counselors are required to be mature adults 55 or older; interested in learning new things about oneself and others; and willing to commit to 20-session training course and one year of service.
