G6PD; FTT; ADHD; So Many Letters, So Little Time - Jewish Press
In our "speedy" lives, we have taken to speaking in letters instead of concepts. In Israel, with army service being so "porous" (you go home to get your laundry done), many army acronyms are in the regular language. Parents today may hear many letters being thrown at them. Not only are they unfamiliar with the "shorthand" letters, but also with the disorders or concepts that they convey. I will try to explain the letters I noted in the title, G6PD and FTT, and spend a little more time on ADHD. G6PD: When the red blood cells can no longer transport oxygen effectively throughout the body, a condition called hemolytic anemia arises. In addition to hemolytic anemia, G6PD-deficient individuals can expect several other clinical manifestations of their condition. These include neonatal jaundice, abdominal and/or back pain, dizziness, headache, dyspnea (irregular breathing) and palpitations (Cecil, 1992). I`ll just touch on the G6PD- deficiency, which can be brought on by eating Fava beans (also known as Favaism). G6PD is more common in people hailing from the Eidot Hamizrach (generally misidentified as Sephardim) or Mediterranean countries in general (though Ashkenazim are also among those affected.)
