Gov. Ed Rendell heralded it as an investment in the future for the vo-tech students, Lehigh Valley businesses and the state of Pennsylvania. ''We need to invest in the future to attract the cutting-edge industries to Pennsylvania.'' The Lehigh Valley has become a major warehousing center, and educators see continuing growth in the materials handling and logistics technology fields. The institute tailors its curricula to areas where its students can find jobs in local industries. The school said the average wage for materials handlers is about $12 an hour, with director of logistics positions paying up to $95,000 a year. Don Hoegg, a member of the school's curriculum advisory committee, said vo-tech students are being hired locally at automated warehouses run by Bridgestone-Firestone, Americold and Walgreens.
