Association targets AMD - Daily American Online (subscription)
A $90,000 grant application to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Growing Greener Program will target AMD into Big Paint Creek from the Eureka No. 42 mine, located on the Pennsylvania Railroad, in Adams Township, Cambria County. It was previously owned by Berwind White Coal Mining Co., Philadelphia.A silt and mud infiltration into a tributary of Little Paint Creek has largely been stopped, thanks to efforts by Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center officials to improve erosion prevention on nearby property, Wargo said.The school spent between $4,000 and $5,000 to cover open areas of ground with silt fences, bale hay and in cleaning out a holding pond in order to stop a discharge that occurs during heavy rain events, Wargo said.School officials were approached by association members about a month ago and responded immediately to improvement suggestions from watershed members, Wargo said.At the time, rains would send so much silt and mud into the tributary that “when you get to the bridge at Berwick Road, it was like chocolate,” Wargo said.The association adjourned the Monday meeting in order to inspect site and showcase the school's work to attending members.(Dan DiPaolo can be contacted at dand@dailyamerican.com.)
