Few Valley businesses take advantage of federal program - Brownsville Herald
As of November 2004, four certified firms were from Brownsville, the total for Cameron County. While the number of participants may seem miniscule, a Small Business Administration official says it is growing, and increased participation is just a matter of getting the word out about the program. Several Cameron County business owners cited various reasons why Valley entrepreneurs didn’t apply in higher numbers, from lack of awareness to an overwhelming workload to misconceptions about working with the government. Applicants’ to the SBA program must be owned and controlled by one or more “socially and economically disadvantaged individuals,” according to the agency’s Web site, and demonstrate potential for success. Firms must be small businesses, the definition of which is industry- and product-based, and depends on sales and the number of employees. Non-minority business owners may qualify, provided they document a history of discrimination. Certified businesses are eligible for “sole-source,” or no-bid federal contracts worth as much as $5 million. Additionally, federal agencies must award a percentage of contracts to such businesses.
