In the summer of 1965, the College of Mount St. Joseph announced auditions for a community production of "The Sound of Music." My wife earned the part of Elsa, the baroness, my brother was Rolf ("I Am 16 Going on 17') and I turned out to be the captain. Notable in the cast were Mary Jo Katona, local diva, who played Mother Superior; Bonnie Otten, whose husband Tom is principal of Elder High School, took the part of Maria; and Jay Cranley, father of Councilman John Cranley, had a featured role. . In the 40 years since, my wife and I have six children and seven grandchildren; my brother and his wife Dianne have three children and five grandchildren. Family parties never end without a chorus of "Edelweiss' in honor of our Irish father who loved that song.
