That's the heart of his now contradictory story: He's a philosopher, known for the eloquence of his speeches, with more than a little Southern preacher in him. His friends describe him as an honorable, charismatic leader. But his critics -- who have been growing in number since an investigation found that the Ladners spent university money on foie gras, limousines, French wine and family parties -- say he's unethical, manipulative and imperious. Soon after he arrived at AU, Benjamin Ladner started hearing from critics, including students who said he was wasting tuition dollars. (James A. Parcell - Twp) Benjamin A. Ladner -->1994: Ladner becomes American University's thirteenth president. 1995: Ladner implements change, firing top administrators and leading efforts to raise university's profile, boost enrollment and raise funds. He draws criticism for hiring a personal chef and spending some $200,000 for drainage work and landscaping. 1997: Ladner renegotiates contract. If he is terminated without "just cause," he gets a year's leave with full salary and benefits, plus compensation equal to his base pay and $50,000 for relocation. He also retains tenure.
