Corvallis man gets ‘Rising Star’Martin Thompson of Corvallis has been named a recipient of a 2005 Loren L. “Stub” Stewart “Rising Star” award by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.The awards are named after a long-time member of the State Parks Advisory Committee, “Stub” Stewart. Stewart also served as chairman of the advisory board for 23 years. The Stewart awards are given for outstanding volunteer service to Oregon’s parks and recreational areas.The “Rising Star” award is given for exceptional service over a brief period of time. Thompson is a founding member of the Boston Mill Society, also known as the Friends of Thompson’s Mills. He was recognized for his leadership in seeing Thompson’s Mills, near Shedd, preserved as one of the OPRD’s state heritage sites.Corvallis student gets scholarshipBeaudre Barnes, a Corvallis resident and a senior at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, will be honored with the Mary Stuart Rogers Scholarship at an awards dinner on Oct. 26.Rogers Scholars are selected based on their academic achievement, leadership and outstanding personal qualities. Barnes is a returning Rogers Scholar at Lewis & Clark. He is majoring in international affairs and foreign languages. He spend last year in Munich, Germany, with Lewis & - more available
