A special homecoming, Donnie goines returning to East Texas with Purple HeartBy Don WallaceThe United States Marine Corps made official what family and friends already knew — Donnie Goines is a hero.Goines received a Purple Heart for being wounded in Iraq. The medal was presented by three star Gen. Amos in San Antonio.Goines, a Lance Corporal. in the Marines, was injured Aug. 22 in Iraq. The Brownsboro High School graduate, a member of a truck convoy which struck a bomb, received second and third degree burns on his hands, neck and legs. He also had other injuries ranging from a damaged eardrum and severed artery to shrapnel piercing his skull.The Marine was first taken to a hospital near the battle lines in Iraq where a field medic performed life-saving surgery on Goines on top of a desk.Goines was transferred to a specialized medical facility in San Antonio for treatment for his burns and other wounds.“Now he is better and going to come home,” Donnie’s dad, Donald Goines said with a weary smile.The Goines family is planning a deluxe homecoming Saturday, Oct. 22 at noon at the Murchison school.The festivities will include plenty of barbecue, but the main item on the - more available
