Empty suitcase leads to evacuation - Carlisle Sentinel
But the suspicious suitcase leaning against a Dumpster behind the barracks' business district was empty.A "concerned" caller informed the U.S. Army War College about the suitcase around 2:30 p.m., forcing the evacuation of the commissary, post exchange, retail stores and a parking lot by the Claremont Road exit.Carlisle Borough police closed Claremont Road as a precaution. Nearby residents were asked to stay inside their homes and an intercom announcement on the barracks made passersby aware of the need to avoid the area.Barracks spokeswoman Carol Kerr says members of the state police hazardous device and explosion section were called to the scene with a bomb-sniffing dog."I was pleasantly surprised they were there so fast," says Lt. Col. Ty McPhillips, the barracks' garrison commander.McPhillips says he and Lt. Col. Bob Suskie, in charge of the barracks' Department of Emergency Services, watched from a safe distance and worked to keep in "close communication with state and local police."
