Sixty-eight years and going strong - Greensboro News Record
GREENSBORO -- A mere 15 at the time, Viola Murphey could not help but notice her brother's good friend Joseph Swaney."He was good looking," Viola said with a sly grin.Viola also had caught the eye of then 23-year-old Joseph. When he asked her if she could take a ride with him one afternoon, Viola was surprised that her father agreed."Since he was older, I figured my father would say no," she said. Her parents had gotten to know Joseph through his friendship with Viola's brother and liked and trusted him.Viola and Joseph started dating and quickly fell in love."I enjoyed being with him," Viola said.Special dates included trips to the movies, picnics and "just riding around."After two years of dating, Joseph proposed. They were married Oct. 2, 1937, in Danville, Va."We traveled to Danville because we didn't want to have to wait on the blood test here," Viola said. "Plus, we couldn't afford a big wedding."The couple lived in a two-room apartment on Carolina Street in Greensboro while Viola worked at Blue Gem Manufacturing Co. and Joseph worked at Dodson's Garage as an auto mechanic. They eventually bought a home on Sharpe Road, where they lived for 32 years.The couple - more available
